School District No. 67
partner groups (students, teachers, support staff,
administrators, parents and Board) first met in 2002 and
identified three District Goals to pursue over the following
three years. We have maintained a steady focus on literacy,
numeracy and social responsibility . As a result, we have
all developed and benefited tremendously - in our
understanding, in our collaboration and in our instructional
strategies. However, we have also seen a shift in the area
of social responsibility . It is being integrated in a
meaningful way into the classroom through various
initiatives such as Tribes, Transitions and Roots of
Empathy. In the 2007/2008 school year we began refocusing
the Social Responsibility goal even more and we now have a
District Goal that looks to "improve school completion and
transitions for students'. The District Progress Report
continues to outline the The District Progress Report
continues to outline the
various indicators of
progress in these three goal areas.

Literacy Rationale: All 19 district schools
identified Literacy as one of their school improvement goals.
The work group is divided into three school configuration
groups: Elementary (K - 5), Middle (6 - 8), and Secondary (9 -
12). The committee has continued to evolve since 2002 yet the
underlying goal is still the same: "to improve student success
in reading". There has been a focus on identification of needs
through whole class assessments, increased use of research-based
models, best practice, shared expertise and in-service of
school-wide reading programs and instructional practices. |

Numeracy Rationale:
12 of our 19 schools identified Numeracy as a
focus for improvement in addition to their literacy goal.
The district work group is
also divided into the three school configuration groups and the
goal continues to be "to improve student success in numeracy".
The committee has continued to uphold the vision that: 1) all
students should learn to value mathematics; 2) become confident
in their ability to do mathematics: 3) become mathematical
problem solvers; 4) learn to communicate mathematics; and 5)
learn to reason mathematically. |

School Completion and Transitions |
 |
Improve
students' transitions and success in completing school by:
providing focused support for students; enhancing the relevancy
of programs and learning options for students; developing and
implementing approaches to instruction that are supportive of
learning; and, to increase students' understanding, practice,
and recognition of socially responsible behaviour.

School Completion and Transitions Rationale:
14 of our 19 schools identified either School Completion and/or
Social Responsibility as a focus of improvement in addition to
their literacy goal. The newly formed workgroup has continued
to consolidate both the school completion and social
responsibility initiatives into one group that brings an
increased effort on helping every student forge stronger
connections to school that will better support them in
successfully completing their education programs and to
successfully transition from level to level in the school system
and to lives beyond. |
