The Giant’s Head School Library Resource Centre follows the guidelines established by School District 67 Policy #470 for challenged materials:

1. Resources must be selected by qualified professionals with the learning objectives of students in mind.

2. All interested individuals must have access to learning resources in order to ensure freedom of review.

3. If, after discussion of the challenged material, the parties concerned cannot reach an agreement, the complainant shall be invited to file a complaint to the Media Review Committee in writing on a "Request for Reconsideration of Learning Resources" form (available from the school board office).

4. The Media Review Committee shall consist of:

bullet

a member of the Board of School Trustees;

bullet

the superintendent or his/her nominee;

bullet

a school principal (other than the one involved in the dispute);

bullet

the complainant or his/her nominee;

bullet

one librarian (from a school other than the one involved in the dispute);

bullet

one parent.

5. After the complaint is filed, the Media Review Committee will, at the earliest opportunity:

bullet

read and/or examine materials referred to it;

bullet

check general acceptance of the materials by reading reviews;

bullet

judge the materials on their entirety and not on a passage or passages out of context;

bullet

meet to discuss the material and prepare a report on it;

bullet

invite the complainant and the person(s) concerned with the selection and/or use of the material to present their views;

bullet

forward its recommendation to the school board.

6. While the Media Review Committee is considering material, it may be withdrawn from the collection and from circulation in the school involved.

7. The complainant shall have the right to appeal the recommendation of the Media Review Committee. The school board, after hearing both parties, will render a decision.
