A number of courses that focus on Aboriginal content are available in SD67.  These courses are available to all students and are a part of the school's regular course offerings.

  • Aboriginal Awareness 7: an exploratory class at Skaha Lake Middle School that is taken by all students in grade 7.  The course is designed to give students an appreciation and understanding of Aboriginal culture, people, and history.  Please contact teacher Tanya Hall (thall@summer.com) for more information.

  • BC First Nations Studies 12: this course is offered at Pen High and can be used to meet the graduation criteria for Social Studies 11.  This course explores the history of BC from pre-contact to the present from an Aboriginal perspective.  Please contact teacher Dustin Hyde (dhyde@summer.com) for more information.

  • English 10 and 12 First Peoples: these courses are offered at Princess Margaret and they are the equivalent of English 10 and English 12, but all of the course content is presented through the perspective of authentic First Peoples resources.  There is a focus on oral narratives, and contemporary, local content.  Please contact Dan Van Os (dvanos@summer.com) for more information and teacher contacts.

  • Aboriginal Cultural Connections 12: this is a new course available to students at all three secondary schools in SD67.  Students acquire 100 hours of participation in cultural learning opportunities in the areas of: physical, socio-emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and leadership.  Please contact Al Beckingham – Principal of the Aboriginal Education Program – for more information.
