Grade 5 students are participating in the
InStill life program, which invites students to explore and change the world
through their own creativity.
Students look at food in their homes, community and around the planet. After
looking at food still life paintings through history, students create their
own. Our grade 5 class has used apples as their inspiration as a way to
explore and raise awareness of the real life challenges of apple growing in
the Okanagan. The paintings will be turned into gift cards which will be
shared are sold throughout the community and beyond.
Proceeds from these card sales are used to fund food challenges locally and
to lend to individuals around the world through kiva.org, an organization
which enables micro-lending. Students will research family farmers and small
scale food entrepreneurs in developing countries and examine their loan
requests before collectively issuing repayable loans. On a classroom map,
photos and stories from around the globe will bring the world to life as
students bring life to the world. The project has been sponsored by Rotary
Penticton and is an initiative of OliveUs, the education foundation founded
