In Still Life

Grade 5 students are participating in the InStill life program, which invites students to explore and change the world through their own creativity.

Students look at food in their homes, community and around the planet. After looking at food still life paintings through history, students create their own. Our grade 5 class has used apples as their inspiration as a way to explore and raise awareness of the real life challenges of apple growing in the Okanagan. The paintings will be turned into gift cards which will be shared are sold throughout the community and beyond.

Proceeds from these card sales are used to fund food challenges locally and to lend to individuals around the world through kiva.org, an organization which enables micro-lending. Students will research family farmers and small scale food entrepreneurs in developing countries and examine their loan requests before collectively issuing repayable loans. On a classroom map, photos and stories from around the globe will bring the world to life as students bring life to the world. The project has been sponsored by Rotary Penticton and is an initiative of OliveUs, the education foundation founded by Theo's restaurant. More info at oliveus.ca
