Wed Sept 14 Students did a STAR reading test to see what book level they are at and wrote a good copy of their Hightlights letter to their senior buddy.  HW = artistic part of My Highlights and good copy of My Highlights letter due Friday morning before Sun-Oka trip
Thur Sept 15 Used class time to finish our Ideal Classroom vote and work on either the artistic or written part of My Hightlights.  HW = My Highlights letter and artistic poster due Friday.
Fri Sept 16 No English class today, Sun-Oka Team Building day.
Mon Sept 19 Students completed the Star Reading test to see their reading level and find their ZPD level for AR books.  Mrs. Colquhoun did the book pass with 8-3's in the library so that students had a list of books they wanted to read.  HW = Read 20 minutes tonight
Tues Sept 20 Students picked their AR books from the library and set their AR goal for first term.  HW = 20 minutes tonight.
Wed Sept 21 Read AR books and completed the Science and Math textbook form.  HW = read 20 minutes tonight.
Thur Sept 22 Read AR book and used some of English block for Science.  Students matched scientific method terms and definitions.  HW = read 20 minutes tonight.
Fri Sept 23 Students watched the ESPN 30-for-30 episode, "Into The Wind".  A documentary about Terry Fox to get ready for the Terry Fox run.  HW = read 20 minutes over the weekend.
Mon Sept 26 Read the math story, "Grandfather Tang's Story" and used tangrams to practice visualizing and inferring reading strategies.  HW = read 20 minutes tonight.
Tues Sept 27 Students silent read their AR books.  Accelerated Reading (AR) forms will be coming home this week.  HW = read 20 minutes tonight. 
Wed Sept 28 Today was Stop Drop and Read Day at SMS.  Students carried their AR book to every class so that they could read whenever their was a stop, drop, and read announcement.  No HW!
Thurs Sept 29 Silent read AR book and then read "Cyclists Have Big Hearts" for Science.  While reading the article, students practiced their reading strategies (connection, questions, visualization, inferring, and transforming).  HW = read 20 minutes tonight.
Fri Sept 30 Students read an article for their exercise experiment for Science and took notes.  HW = have your 3x3 grid notes completed for the first article you read, due Monday.

Tues Oct 4 Students continued reading exercise/heart rate articles for Science and continued with taking notes.  Students started writing their background information paragraph for their exercise experiment.  HW = Background Info paragraph for the exercise experiment is due Friday.
Wed Oct 5 Used English block to investigate example procedures for the exercise experiment for Science class.  Students corrected their exercise experiment procedure.  HW = corrected procedure is due during advisory tomorrow.
Thurs Oct 6 Students either read their AR book or completed their background information paragraph for the exercise experiment.  See exercise experiment criteria sheet for background information paragraph (information gathering) expectations.  HW = background info paragraph is due tomorrow.
Fri Oct 7 Used English block to complete the exercise experiment procedure.  All groups should have completed their exercises and have their own copy of the data to graph.  HW = good copy of exercise experiment due Thursday.
Tues Oct 11 Students returned their overdue library books and used English block to complete their good copy of the exercise experiment for Science.  HW = read 20 minutes tonight and make sure your good copy of your exercise experiment is done for Thursday.
Wed Oct 12 Students read their AR book and had a magazine assembly.  HW = read min 20 minutes tonight.  You should be close to writing at least one AR quiz by now to reach your AR goal.
Thurs Oct 13 Me to We assembly!  Make a change and be a hero.  Start small and watch how you can influence your community and ultimately the world.
Fri Oct 14 Students should now have completed an AR quiz at this point so that they can reach their reading goal for first term.  On Monday I will be introducing literature circle books so students will be part of a "book club" that they will be reading and talking about.  Tuesday will be the Whole Class Reading Assessment.  HW = have you finished at least one book and written and AR quiz?
Mon Oct 17 Class photos were taken today during English block and the remainder of the block was spent silent reading.
Tues Oct 18 Students wrote the Whole Class Reading Assessment today.  This assessment is to see where your son/daughter is at with respect to grade 8 level reading comprehension, reading strategies, and understanding of words.  HW = read AR book

Thurs Nov 3 We have been reading our AR books in class and doing small creative writing assignments.  Remembrance Day is approaching fast and we will be looking at some journals from veterans in the coming days. 
Mon Nov 7 Read a "Canada Remembers Times" Newspaper in class.  Students cut-out an article and then shared on paper some thoughts; "Why you chose the article", "How did it make you feel?" and "Any connections to the article".  Students should be doing 20 minutes of AR every evening.
Thurs Nov 10 Remembrance Day Ceremonies today.  Reminder to students to be doing some reading this long weekend!
