Date Assignment Wed Sept 9 Listed out the school supplies that are needed for Math and Science this year (good attitude, binder, paper, pen or pencil, calculator that has a square root symbol, and a duotang for your journal). Today we did some activities that helped define what good group work looks like in our class. HW = complete the Student Yellow Pages for Friday. Thurs Sept 10 Showed students a card trick called "Count to 10" and they worked in groups (using the group work criteria defined in Science block) to come up with the mathematical reasoning as to why the trick worked. Card tricks are not magic, but they are math. HW = try the card trick on your parents. Fri Sept 11 Students worked in groups to identify and find relevance of Math used in real life, using the picture stations. HW = have a great weekend and make sure to have a calculator that has a square root button for next week. Mon Sept 14 Checked out Math and Science textbooks today so make sure that you keep your in good condition. Students continued working identifying real life Math situations, using the movie clip "Born Numeracy". HW = complete the Real Life table, due Tuesday. Wed Sept 16 Introduced Integers and how they are used in golf and other real life examples. Students worked in groups and discussed several questions that were given about organizing integers, etc. HW = if you forget how to add/subtract integers from last year, then you will want to practice before we start this unit. Here are two websites that you can practice add/subtracting integers (Integer Four and Count the Chips). Thur Sept 17 Students completed the "Lighten Your Load" activity using their backpacks and the "stuff" that was in it. HW = have your maximum load and under/over calculations complete for Thursday. Fri Sept 18 Sunoka Beach, team building day! Mon Sept 21 Students reviewed adding and subtracting integers by using the Count the Chips or the Integer Four website. HW = bring a golf club for tomorrows integer tournament and complete the Adding/Subtracting Integers Practice for tomorrow. Tues Sept 22 Great job with the Integer Golf Tournament today, 8-2's. HW = Adding/Subtracting Integers Practice was due today, but we didn't get a chance to mark it. Try a couple of questions from the Count the Chips or the Integer Four website. Wed Sept 23 Students added up there scores from the Integer Golf Tournament that we had yesterday and completed the journal questions, click here for the questions. HW = journal questions due Thursday. Thurs Sept 24 Students completed the explore and connect part of section 2.1, Multiplying Integers. No HW, we will continue tomorrow. Fri Sept 25 Reviewed multiplying integers using a number line and discussed using integer tiles to multiply integers. HW = page 67 #1-4 Discuss ideas, Math links and page 68 #6 & 8 due Monday. Mon Sept 28 While I checked students homework from last day, they completed the assessment focus question #15 on page 69 and the integer multiplication chart. If students did not complete these in class, they are due for homework. Students took notes on multiplying more than two integers. HW = Practice questions from the board, due Tuesday. Tues Sept 29 Students marked their own questions from the board while we discussed the answers and students played the "What's My Product?" page 76 in the textbook. Well done 8-2's We read the story, "365 Penguins" which related to multiplication. Wed Sept 30 Students took notes and practiced modeling dividing integers using number lines and integer tiles (sec 2.3 and 2.4 from textbook). HW = page 81 #3, 6 (a-d), 8(a-d), 11, & 14, due Thursday. October
Date Assignment Thur Oct 1 Students played Integer Bingo, practicing multiplying and dividing integers. HW = start studying of the unit 2 test coming up on Wednesday. Fri Oct 2 Section 2.5 from the textbook on Order of Operations Using Integers. HW = p 92 #3, 5, 6, 9, 11, 17 due Monday. Unit 2 (Integers) test coming up on Wednesday. Mon Oct 5 Students marked their homework from page 92 and we discussed what will be on the unit 2 Integer test on Wednesday (see page 96). Students completed the Reflect on Learning self assessment on integers and started the Practice Test page 99, which they will continue next class. HW = Practice Test is due at the end of next class and study for integers test coming up on Wed. Tues Oct 6 Handed back the Reflect on Learning. Students finished their Practice Test page 99 in class and some played integer games to practice for the test tomorrow. HW = study for the Integer test tomorrow. Wed Oct 7 Students wrote the Integers test today. No HW! Thur Oct 8 Students marked their own test and handed them in. For the rest of class we played integer bingo. No HW for the weekend! Fri Oct 9 Amazing Race Day, no Math class today. Tues Oct 13 Students reviewed adding and subtracting fractions using fraction circles. This was taught in grade 7 and we did a quick review of what was learned in grade 7. Tomorrow we will start with unit 3 on fractions. HW = Unit 2: integer test corrections and parent signature due Thursday. Wed Oct 14 Students completed the intro to unit 3 on page 102-103 of the textbook. We discussed what they will learn in the unit and why it is important (see page 102). HW = Unit 2: integer test corrections and parent signature due Thursday. Thur Oct 15 Students completed section 3.1 Multiplying Fractions and Whole Numbers with Models investigate and connect (page 104-105). We will look at the patterns and come up with a rule for multiplying fractions tomorrow. HW = No HW, unless you haven't got your integer test corrections. Fri Oct 16 Students completed section 3.2 Multiplying Fractions and Fractions with Models investigate and connect (page 110-11). HW = p 108 #7, 14, 18 due Monday. Mon Oct 19 Used Math block today for exercise experiment, see Science 8-2. HW = good copy of exercise experiment due Thursday. Tues Oct 20 Students had a TOC today, thanks Mrs. Tegart! Students marked their homework (p 108 #7, 14, 18) from last day and discussed modeling multiplying fractions. Students used their background knowledge to come up with what they already new about mixed fraction and a lesson on how to multiply fractions. HW = 3.2 worksheet and p125 #6, 7, 8, 12, 14 & 18 due Wed. Wed Oct 21 Students marked their homework from yesterday and wrote a short quiz on multiplying fractions. The rest of class was used for working on the exercise experiment for Science. HW = complete 3.2 worksheet if you have not completed it and exercise experiment due Thursday. Thur Oct 22 Handed back the short quiz from yesterday and students a) got more practice on multiplying fractions if they did not understand the quiz well or b) got practice on multiplying rational numbers, the next step. HW = complete which ever extra practice you got for Monday. Mon Oct 26 Discussed the meaning of division using our background knowledge of dividing whole numbers. Students completed the investigate and connect part of section 3.5 Dividing Whole Numbers by Fractions. HW = page 132 #3, due Tuesday. Tues Oct 27 Reviewed the investigate from section 3.5 in the textbook (page 129) and students practiced dividing whole numbers by fractions. HW = page 132 #3, 4, 5, 6, 8 & 9 due Wed. Wed Oct 28 Students marked their own homework from the back of the textbook and came up with a pattern for dividing fractions. Individually, students doubled and halved the cookie recipe from the board and showed their thinking process. HW = cookie recipe is due Thursday. Thur Oct 29 Students handed in the cookie recipe and practiced dividing fractions by Game Spinner (spin and find two fractions to divide). Fri Oct 30 No Math class today, due to the Halloween Dance.
Date Assignment Mon Nov 2 Handed back the cookie recipe assignments from Thursday and students wrote a short quiz on dividing fractions to assess how well they understood dividing fractions. No HW, unless you are missing a task on your interim. Tues Nov 3 Students completed the investigate and connect for section 3.8 Fraction Word Problems. HW = study for fraction test coming up next week and complete 3.8 worksheet, due Wed. Wed Nov 4 Marked 3.8 worksheet on fraction word problems and students requested extra practice on word problems. HW = Extra practice on fraction word problems, due Thursday. Note: fraction test is coming up on Tuesday. Thur Nov 5 Marked the extra practice for fraction word problems, see answer key and completed the investigate and connect for section 3.9 Order of Operations. HW = page 155 #4, 5, 6, 8, 11 due Friday. Your fraction test will be on Tuesday so make sure you know how to multiply, divide, add, and subtract. Fri Nov 6 Students marked their own homework from last day, page 155 work and completed the Fractions Reflect on Learning sheet. HW = practice test page 162 #1-8, due Monday. Note: Fraction test is coming up on Tuesday. Mon Nov 9 Students continued working on the page 162 Practice Test and we used some of Math to look at the human lungs and heart today. HW = Fraction test on Tuesday. Tues Nov 10 Wrote the Fraction test today, no homework. Wed Nov 11 Remembrance Day Thur Nov 12 Marked the fraction test with students and discussed the correct answers. No HW! Fri Nov 13 Students completed the tile question on the board and wrote their group discussion and thinking in their math journal. HW = math journal questions due Monday. Mon Nov 16 Discussed what we will learn in chapter 5 and how percents, rates, and ratios are important in real life. Students completed the investigate for section 5.1 Converting Percents to Decimals, and Fractions. HW = practice page 239 # 6, 8, 16, 18 due Tuesday. Tues Nov 17 Marked Monday's homework on page 239 and discussed why and when we would covert a percent to a decimal or a fraction (taxes and test marks). Handed back the fraction test for students to complete corrections. Students used the last half of Math class to study for their respiratory and circulatory system test for Science. HW = Fraction test correction and parent signature is due Friday. Wed Nov 18 Students completed the investigate part of section 5.2 Calculating Percents. HW = page 246 #6, 7, 8, 10, 16 is due Thursday. Thur Nov 19 Marked yesterday's homework and discussed the answers. Students needed some more practice with calculating percents before moving onto word problems with percents. HW = Why Did the Teacher Give One of Her Students A Button Like This One sheet, due Monday. Fri Nov 20 No Math, due to Bannermania. Don't forget to complete the extra practice percent sheet that is due Monday. Mon Nov 23 Students completed the investigate and example 1 of the connect on page 248-249 of the textbook. We will continue example 2-3 from the connect tomorrow. HW = if you haven't got your fraction test corrections handed in, please do so. Tues Nov 24 Continued from yesterday the connect from section 5.3 page 249-251 (Percent Word Problems). HW = practice page 252 # 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 13 & 17 due Wednesday. Wed Nov 25 We had a great discussion today in class on which provinces/territories have the lowest and highest taxes in Canada. Students used their inferring skills to explain why PEI has the highest taxes and Alberta has one of the lowest taxes in Canada. We also read about the new HST that is coming in the new year to BC. No HW! Thur Nov 26 Students completed the investigate from section 5.4 on Taxes. HW = page 260 # 6 -10 due Friday. Fri Nov 27 Students completed the Store 8 Shopping Activity to practice calculating tax and discount, due Monday if not completed in class. Mon Nov 30 Students worked on the mid-unit review for chapter 5 to assess what they still needed help with and what they understood well. HW = page 263 #1-12, due Tuesday.

HW = practice p266-267 #6-8, 10, 11, 14 due Wed. Wed Dec 2 Discussed how people make different commission ex) realtor, sales person, etc. HW = Commission worksheet # 11-19, due Thursday. Thur Dec 3 Used Math block to dissect an owl pellet for Science (digestion) and marked the commission homework. No HW! Fri Dec 4 Notes on Simple Interest, which are not in your textbook. HW = Simple Interest worksheet, due Monday. Mon Dec 7 With partners students bought and sold furniture (using Sears catalogues) for their "dream room" that they created. Students were given a fake $10, 000 limit credit card to purchase the furniture, but they have to pay 18% interest. The seller gets 10% commission and of course there is always 12% GST and PST tax that you have to pay. Students will continue working on this tomorrow. Tues Dec 8 Students continued working on their "Dream Room" project, including commission, tax, and interest calculations. HW = Dream Room due Wed. Wed Dec 9 Collected the Dream Room project that was due today. Students wrote a quiz on percent, not including taxes, commission, and interest to assess what they needed to work on. NO HW! Thur Dec10 Students worked on the investigate for section 5.6 Equivalent Ratios. HW = page 274-275 #5-9, 13, and reflect question due Friday. Fri Dec 11 Students completed the investigate for section 5.7 Comparing Ratios. HW = page 284 #6-11, due Monday. Mon Dec 14 Students worked on the investigate for section 5.8 Ratio Problems. HW = page 291 #7, due Tuesday. Chapter 5 test on Percents and Ratios is on Thursday. Tues Dec 15 We reviewed comparing ratios and ratio problems from last day. Students had difficulties with Monday's homework so we did the questions in class. HW = page 291 # 4, and 7-11 due Wednesday. Bring in your money for the Sweet Tooth field trip for Thursday. Note: Chapter 5 test (Percents and Ratios only) on Thursday. Wed Dec 16 Students marked page 291 homework and started the practice test on page 213 for percents and ratios. Date Assignment Mon Jan 4 Happy New Year and welcome back! Discussed how to calculate scale drawings and the scale drawing project. HW = Scale Drawings and Map Scales worksheet, due Tuesday. Also have your picture for your scale drawings project tomorrow. Tues Jan 5 Students marked their the Scale Drawings and Map Scales calculation worksheet and then started their Scale Drawing project. HW = if you did not understand the calculations then please try them again for homework. Scale Drawing project is due Friday, but you will have more class time to complete it. Wed Jan 6 Students continued working on the Scale Drawing project, which is due Friday. Thurs Jan 7 Continued working on the Scale Drawing project. HW = Scale Drawing due Friday. Fri Jan 8 Students had some time to finish up their scale drawings and then handed them in. No HW, enjoy your weekend! Mon Jan 11 Using their knowledge of ratios and rates, students completed part a - c of the unit problem on page 314-315. HW = complete the unit 5 problem, up to and including part c for Tuesday. Tues Jan 12 Marked the unit 5 problem homework together in class and introduced algebra (see page 314 in textbook). Discussed why algebra is important and where we use it in real life. Started the "Converting Words Into Math" notes, which we will continue next class. Wed Jan 13 Continued the "Converting Words Into Math" sheet and introduced modeling algebra (see section 6.1, only the scales part). HW = page 324 #7, 9, 12, 14, and 17 due Monday. Thur Jan 21 Reviewed multiplication of fractions and completed the investigate for section 6.3 Solving Algebra with Fractions. We will continue section 6.3 tomorrow. If you are struggling with the review today then you need to come and see me for extra help. Tues Feb 2 Discussed "collecting like terms" in algebra (this section is not in your textbook). HW = the collecting like terms sheet due Wed. Wed Feb 3 Used Math block to research virus, bacteria, or fungi for the Disease Research Project (Science). Project is due Feb 12th. Thur Feb 4 Showed students how the distributed property and collecting like terms is used when solving algebra. Students saw some grade 9 level math that they will see next year. HW = whatever collecting like terms worksheet that you got today is due Friday. Fri Feb 5 Discussed Relations and Ordered Pairs and students completed the 5.3 Ordered Pairs worksheet, due Monday. Note: Chapter 6 Algebra Test is coming up on Wednesday so take a look at the Unit Review at the end of the chapter for practice. Mon Feb 8 Reviewed graphing coordinates on a Cartesian grid (graphing positive and negative numbers) and completed the example #1 on page 361 of the textbook. HW = 5.4 Graphing Order Pairs worksheet and page 364 #11 due Tuesday. Chapter 6 test is on Wednesday, take a look at the Practice Test to prepare for the test on Wednesday.
Tues Feb 9 Discussed what students should know for the test on algebra tomorrow and completed the Reflect on Learning for Ch 6. HW = Unit 6 problem, page 376, part 1-4 due Wednesday. If you need some study questions then take a look at the Practice test on page 374-375 in your textbook. Wed Feb 10 Students wrote the Unit 6: Algebra test. No HW! Thur Feb 11 Students continued writing the Unit 6: Algebra test, if they needed more time or they worked on their Disease Project for Science. No HW for Math, but make sure your Disease Project is done for tomorrow. Fri Feb 12 Marked the Unit 6: Algebra test and students completed their corrections. No HW! Mon Feb 15 Handed back the Algebra Test and watched the movie, Osmosis Jones, for Science. HW = parent signature and test corrections due Wed. Note: Signed interims are due Wed. Tues Feb 16 Discussed congruent, quadrilateral, and different shape vocabulary from page 4-5 in the textbook. Using graph paper, students determined how to find the area of a triangle from a parallelogram. HW = interims and parent signature/ test corrections due Wed. Wed Feb 17 Used Math block for Science today, no Math homework unless you have not handed in the algebra test corrections with a parent signature. Interims were due today. Thur Feb 18 Students completed the investigate and connect for section 1.1, Square Numbers, from the textbook. HW = page 8 #6-9, 11, 18 due Monday. Fri Feb 19 Ski Trip, no class today! Mon Feb 22 Reviewed square number and square root terms from section 1.1 last day. Completed the section 1.3, Measuring a Line Segment, investigate and examples 1 & 2 from the connect (page 17-18). No HW today! Tues Feb 23 Students completed practice of measuring a line segment from section 1.3. HW = page 20 # 3&4 (a,b,c) and 7, due Wed. Wed Feb 24 Students practice square of a number, square root of a number, and side length of a square by playing "Fitting In" (see page 28 in textbook). No HW! Thur Feb 25 Ski Trip, no class today! Fri Feb 26 Missed Math block, due to Olympic Assembly with Kristi Richards. Go Canada, go! All missing tasks must be in by next Friday.
