Tues Jan 5 |
Handed back the KMT assignment and the chapter 5 test that was completed before Winter Break. Handed out the Science Fair parent package so that students could go through it with their parents. HW = Science Fair parent letter and chapter 5 test signed by parent/guardian by Jan 11th. |
| Thur Jan 7 | Read section 6.1 on pure substances and mixtures on page 137 and 138 in the textbook. Student started the scientific write up (problem, hypothesis, material, and procedure) for the "Try This" activity on page 138 of textbook. Students are practicing the scientific method that they will be using in their science fair project with any investigations done in class. HW = Science Fair parent letter and chapter 5 test signed by parent/guardian for Monday. |
| Mon Jan 11 | Students handed in their signed Science Fair letter and chapter 5 test. Reviewed pure substances and mixtures, which were discussed last day and continued the "Try This" activity on page 138 for a brown and green felt. For this experiment, students included the scientific method (problem, hypothesis, materials, procedure, variables, data, discussion, and conclusion) to practice for their Science Fair project. HW = Science Fair topic and partner are picked out and the Felt Experiment (Try This activity), including question #1-3 on page 138 are due for Wednesday's class. |

All students had to have their topic picked out by today so that they could start their experiment with their partner. HW= materials, hypothesis, procedure, variables, and data table is due next week. The Science Fair Outline is due Friday. |
| Fri Jan 15 | Read section 6.2 on Elements and Compounds, students took notes, and Mrs. Arcuri demoed 3 experiments. The experiments showed students that elements/compounds as pure substances react very differently than a mixture with that element/compound. 1) Sodium acts differently in water than table salt (sodium chloride), 2) potassium permanganate and glycerin act very differently as pure substances compared as a mixture and 3) potassium chlorate, sugar, and sulfuric acid act differently as pure substances compared to when they are mixed to make a mixture. HW = Science Fair project should be the main focus for the next couple of weeks. By the end of next week you and your partner should be working on the data table and conclusion of your project. |
