Hearing Resource Support

The Resource Teacher (HRT) for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing provides direct or consultative services to students who have a diagnosed hearing loss.   The HRT helps plan alternate teaching strategies, provides information on assistive listening devices and liaises with community agencies and support groups.   The HRT also provides district and/or school based in-services on hearing loss and related issues.

The role of the Hearing Resource Teacher is to:
•    Assess a student’s auditory functioning, speech, language development and academic achievement
•    Interpret audiological reports and explain the possible educational implications
•    Support the care, use and performance of assistive listening devices (e.g., hearing aids, cochlear implants)
•    Support school teams around appropriate adaptations and supports for their students with hearing loss
•    Provide instruction in the areas of auditory training, speech, self-determination and transition to post-graduation
•    Help facilitate the creation of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for a student
•    Liaise between home, school and outside agencies
•    Provide vocational and/or career guidance
•    Provide hearing screeners for any student through a School Based Team meeting
