67 Stories is a monthly update that includes a collection of stories from our schools. These stories display our dynamic schools with examples of student engagement, creative, and inclusive learning environment.

Over the past several months, students at Princess Margaret Secondary and Columbia Elementary have been working together to develop a music video that showcases the importance of connections. This Big Buddy program emphasizes the importance of developing relationships and a sense of belonging. The memories that the big kids and little kids take away from that are going to last a lifetime.

Trout Creek K's are learning to think like Mathematicians using frozen blocks of ice to build ice castles. We are learning about shapes and objects and how to describe them using attributes (number of sides, corners, flat, curved). We are working hard on our Numeracy Growth Plan This Year.

This month our focus in building school community was on the Core Value of Resilience. The Grade 5s had an opportunity to practice Resilience while learning to cross-country ski at Nickel Plate on January 3rd. Climbing uphill on skis, getting up after falling down countless times and being courageous to try new things (all while smiling the whole time!) exemplifies Resilience and are lessons that will stick with these kids for years to come. We shared their adventure to the school during our Assembly to spread the value and the fun! Thanks to our PAC for supporting this venture.

Giant's Head staff and students are excited that we have received our salmon eggs! We are observing their growth, predicting what will come next, learning about the importance that salmon have to the Okanagan Syilx and eagerly awaiting the next stage. Thanks to Mrs. Haas and FinS for this great learning experience!

Wiltse - In January, Kiwanis provided a free book and bookmark to each grade 2 student at Wiltse school! The Wiltse staff and students would like to extend their appreciation to Kiwanis for their support of student literacy. As you can see, the students were very excited!

At Queen's Park one of our grade 1 classes has partnered up with grade 12's from Maggie. Once a month they have had 'big buddies' and this has provided for a lot of student success and learning. It's hard to tell who likes it more...the big or the little buddies!!!

Our Land Based Learning class is enjoying field trips to Apex! Many students in the class have never been to Apex before, and these trips remove the barriers of cost, equipment, gear and transportation! It's been a ton of fun for everyone!

This month we resumed our focus on equity through the lens of language. In the fall, we learned many Sylix words and now we are including other languages spoken in our school. Two students, Ahmed Al-Mustafa and Zoey Castillo, have been teaching our students common phrases in Arabic and Spanish this month.

Uplands One Book, One School Book Club launched on January 10th with all families receiving a free copy of Charlotte's Web, along with weekly family reading goals and activities. KVR held a Spirit Assembly before the break which allowed students to have fun with their teachers and peers. This assembly was planned and ran by KVR students to ensure their voice was heard and to reinforce their sense of belonging to the KVR community.

At our C.A.R.E. (Create and Read Event) evening, Uplands celebrated the power and beauty that comes with reading with your child. Forty K- Gr 2 students and their parents enjoyed a story in the library followed by an evening of theme-based crafts linked to the story. It was a lovely evening of parents bonding one-on-one with their children.

Over 90 students travelled to Lakeview Cemetery as part of our Remembrance Day ceremony to lay poppies at the graves of veterans. Students got to learn more about Canada's military history through reading the grave stones and reflected on the meaning of Remembrance Day.

Pen High launched our annual Penticton Provides campaign this month, starting with the 10,000 Tonight event raising over 13,000 food items for the Penticton Food Bank. We'd like to extend a MASSIVE thank you to the participating schools and to the community for their efforts in making this happen.

Led by students, the assembly offered a special tribute to all veterans through poems, and songs with a poignant moment as we honoured Lorne Wampler, Chief Medical Officer on the CCGC Point Henry who was represented by Ed Stacey, Alexis Parady and SLMS student Ainzlee Stacey.

Columbia Elementary's intermediate students gathered around the flagpole to recognize Indigenous Veterans Day and watch the lowering of the flag to half-mast.

Queen's Park - November

Queen's Park Hockey is up and running. Each Friday 30 of our students between grade 2-5 come out for one-hour of ice time. Practices always focus on skills, games and fun. A big thank-you to the hockey hall of fame for donating all of our ice times.

Kaleden - November

October ended with a bang with our visit to the pumpkin patch, Halloween monster mash, and our family pumpkin carving/decorating day.

Mr. Fitton took his Wellness 11/12 class to the Penticton Fire Department where students put to test their skills to reduce fear and anxiety by participating in scenarios that would take all of us out of our comfort zone. Students were also able to learn what it takes to be a firefighter, the impact being a firefighter can have on them as individuals, and the ways in which firefighters manage their own stress, fear, and anxiety. It was an incredibly rewarding experience!

Naramata School held its Remembrance Day Ceremony at the cenotaph at Manitou Park in Naramata. It was a cold and windy day, but the students did a wonderful job honouring our veterans with poems and presentations to help us remember.

Students and staff at West Bench gather in the mornings to start the day with singing and drumming led by Monty Joseph. Monty has supported the students and staff in practicing the Okanagan Song, as well as learning Honouring our Grandmothers and the Oreo Song.

Trout Creek Hosted a Pumpkin Run for all Grade 4 and 5 students in the district.

October - Wiltse

Students went deeper with their learning about the true history of our Indigenous People. Within their learning students read stories, completed artwork and listened to language that took place in the classroom and on the land. To many Indigenous communities, eagle feathers are sacred. More recently feathers are used to represent the children who attended residential school and didn't come home. At Wiltse Elementary, each student and staff member coloured a feather that made up the eagle in our hallway to remember.

Travelling is part of the International Student experience. On October 13th thirty-nine of our students went on a three day trip to Vancouver. They got to experience, Stanley Park, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Fly Over Canada among other things. The students were excellent ambassadors for SD 67.

Our school has been focused on equity and community this month. We have used the theme "Walking Together" based on the book by Elder Albert D. Marshall and Louise Zimanyi. We have discussed many ways we can see things from different perspectives and cultures. We have worked to build a positive community to start our school year. Our students have created land acknowledgements to celebrate local Sylix people, celebrated different languages spoken in our school and gave back to their community by raising over $615 for the Terry Fox Foundation - up from $205 last year! We are very proud of the way our students are learning and building a great community here at Carmi!

SD67 had a number of Trades Apprentices start their post-secondary programs at Okanagan College (Penticton & Kelowna) and TRU (Kamloops). This Fall SD67 students are currently in Welding, Plumbing, Refrigeration, Carpentry, Automotive, Heavy Mechanical and Culinary.

This year we started to host community lunches in the gym to bring students, staff and parents together. These lunches occur each week during our hot lunch days and our special harvest soup days.

September - Uplands

Grade 3 Learners at Uplands combined art and chemistry to simulate volcanic eruption. Groups collaborated to create the structures and much excitement ensued!

September - Skaha Lake Middle

Each class was given 1 of the Calls to Action and these were printed onto orange shirts. Students have signed their shirts to show support for the Calls to Action and process of Truth and Reconciliation. We have displayed these shirts in our common area.

As part of our learning and in honouring National Day For Truth and Reconciliation, students and staff at West Bench painted wooden hands and added words and pictures. These hands will be attached to our fence as part of recognizing and remembering that Every Child Matters. Thank you to Kevin Bond at Pen High for cutting out the wooden hands for us.
